You're Being Watched ...

the ubiquitous eye of the NYPD

... does this bother you? Many of you seemed grateful to be watched closely by security cameras. Yet you were alarmed at Jonas's inability to even swipe an apple without being subjected to (anonymous?) punishment in front of his entire community. What is it about the level of security in Jonas's society that is too much? Where do you draw the line between safety and privacy? Be specific using examples from both our world and Jonas's.

Maybe i think that Jonas was just doing that[stealing the apple] to show that rules or things are not fair and people should eat and take home food. In our society, its different because we are free and safe because of security. However, to some people cameras and stuff is bothering people because it invades their privacy. i get what they mean, but i still think that cops should be payed to be all around the area to prevent crime. The government has the money because all they have to do is print more money. Also, there is more freedom in our society then Jonas community. Michael Ruiz 8C

Surveilance cameras don't bother me as much as other people because i look at it as bieng helpful to the people in the community. I think cameras in a community are a good idea but there is a limit, certain boundaries that are crossed with cameras in communities like "invading peoples privacy" like Michael said. I and many other classmates were alarmed when Jonas couldn't bring an apple home because in our community that will never happen and it just seems very odd to us. - Milton Brandon Coradin 8A

The line is that its okay to be watched but only in danger not to be under constance surveillance. Fabian r. 8c

But Fabian, how do you define danger? If a family has a parent who has been violent in the past, should the police or ACS install a surveillance camera in that home?

Being constantly watched by people is not a good thing in my opinion. if your constantly watched you'll never have ANY privacy. You cant do anything in the streets because your being watched. in the streets i would understand because you may be able to catch criminals in the act but other than the streets no.

Riana--

But won't the criminals figure that out? Then they'll just go to where there are no cameras to commit their crimes?

Mr. Wilson

no they wouldn't bc. there would be hidden cameras and surveillance cameras so they wouldn't know if they were being recorded or not.The cameras can be disguised as bird nests, tree branches and other things...

I think that I would not mind being watched on the streets but not at home. Home is where you can do private things and not worry. In the giver the people are being watch 24/7 all around.Surveillance cameras are not much useful, they can watch people but it is not like it is going to catch people at the time.Policemen are not at the secne at that ponit of time it takes time for them to come and the cameras are around not where much police stations are.For the criminals they will be wearing facemasks and looking all different from the person who they are, so the cameras won't catch it.
